Conservatory Air Conditioning
Multi Split
Multi-split air conditioners are the type of system more commonly associated with office & retail environments but are becoming increasingly more common in domestic installations, especially conservatories.
The indoor unit is usually a relatively slimline unit attached to a wall connected via copper pipes to the outdoor unit called the condensor. These types of system are quiet and are becoming more affordable due to a special rate of only 5% VAT, this applies if you buy a 'reverse cycle' type which can heat & cool because of the energy saving benefits a heat pump type system can provide.
These are usually professionally installed but we have noticed some of the DIY chains selling self install units. For instance Wickes are selling the complete units for less than £400 online.
Slimline 'All In One' Air Con
A relatively new type of system is the slimline 'through wall' type of system in which no outside condenser unit is required, this reduces the time & cost needed to install the system as all it requires is 2 x 6" holes bored through the outside wall. The system can apparently run at just 39 decibels & has a cooling capacity of 2.45kw, a very respectable output for a unit of it's size. This unit shown opposite is a Digitemp model manufactured by Xpelair. This type of system is perfect for conservatories due to it's slimline form factor & cost compared to a multi-split.
Portable Air Conditioning
Portable air conditioners are a popular choice in circumstances where air conditioning is only required as a temporary measure, perhaps if your conservatory only becomes unbearable on the hottest of days. The advantages of these types of units is they can be moved around from room to room relatively easily and are a low cost alternative to the units above. Do bear in mind that you will have to find an exit for the hose which is about the same size as a tumble dryer hose. The units can also be relatively noisy. Air Conditioners like this can be bought locally from places like Wickes or online at Alaskan Air Conditioners.
